2.2.1 Released

We would like to announce the release of the first patch for Xibo CMS v2.2. The codename for this series is “Olbers”.
4 issues have been fixed in this release.

Our recent 2.2.0 release was released without updating the minimum PHP requirements to 7.0.8 or later, for which we apologise. Thank you to those who highlighted this!

An issue was also identified with the new Image processing feature:
bug#2032

Images with any dimension larger than 1920 uploaded since 2.2.0 will be in a corrupted state. If you are running on Xibo in the Cloud these have been fixed for you. If you are running on a self-hosted or Docker installation, 2.2.1 will fix future images. We have made a task available to fix existing ones.

Repairing existing corrupted images

Cloud customers do not need to run this task as this has been fixed for you.
To run this task log into your CMS, navigate to Administration -> Tasks and click "Add Task". Find the "Clear Cached Media Data" task in the list and click Save. The task will run once, repair the images and disable itself.

2.3.0-alpha Released

We are pleased to announce the release of our first development preview for the 2.3 version of Xibo. The codename for this version is “Wolf”.

14P/Wolf is a periodic comet with an orbital period of 8.74a (Julian years). Max Wolf (Heidelberg, Germany) discovered the comet on September 17, 1884. It is particularly interesting as its perihelion and orbital period change due to the influcence of Jupiter.

2.3.0-alpha is a development preview only and should not be used in production. You can upgrade to this release from 1.8/2.x series.

Layout Designer

The version 2 Layout Designer that was introduced in 2.0 received mixed reviews from users. The majority adapted to the changes and appreciated the new workflow, but we found that some of our users have not been able to upgrade from 1.8 because the new designer did not fit their workflow. We have listened to all feedback presented and have already made small improvements in 2.1 and 2.2 to act as a stop-gap whilst making the larger changes.

Xibo 2.3 represents a larger set of improvements which brings the designer workflow more inline with how they were and hopefully fixes the issues for all users.

We have designed a simplified view with 3 elements instead of 4:

2.3.0-alpha Released

The top left designer window now operates in a similar manner to 1.8. You can view the contents of each Region with the preview arrows and in Edit mode you can drag/drop and add Regions.

The timeline has been reorganised to provide a clearer view of the play time of each Widget along with an overview of where the Region is situated on the Layout. You can also open a Playlist editor for each Region should you wish to edit those entries vertically in a similar interface to 1.8.

2.3.0-alpha Released

The Library search has been redesigned as a popup window with tabs where you can add a single or multiple items to any point in a Regions Playlist.

2.3.0-alpha Released

The Widget Toolbar has been redesigned to take up less space and to allow each user to add favourites for their most used Widgets so that they appear at the start of the list:

2.3.0-alpha Released

In addition we have gone over the user experience to improve the position of the buttons, and to make workflows operate with as few clicks as possible.

Playlist Manager

We have introduced a Playlist Manager dashboard which gives a user a simpler user interface to manage Library content on a Playlist.

An administrator configures a Sub-Playlist Widget to have one or more Playlists which the Playlist Manager User has permissions to edit, the dashboard will show them the number of Spots that has been configured and allow them to add/replace and optionally remove those items.

2.3.0-alpha Released

Scheduling

We now support Geo-Scheduling such that each event can optionally have geo-data associated with it. Player support for this feature will be added over the coming releases.

2.3.0-alpha Released

Also, you can now delete a single occurence of a repeating Schedule Event.

Docker update

We have updated the base image for our Docker containers to Alpine 3.11 and PHP 7.3.13. This brings us continued security updates and support for the operating system and PHP.

The XMR container has also been updated with the latest Alpine 3.11 and XMR release-0.8 has been pushed into Docker Hub.

Download

We're making this alpha available for people to try using our recommended installation method, Docker. We will be providing release files for the stable 2.3.0 release for those of you running without Docker in due course.

Changelog

Future development

Our immediate development work will be to prepare a 2.3.0-beta release which will add more polish to all the features we've put in 2.3 so far. We will also be responding to your feedback and any bug reports.

Beyond 2.3 we've begun planning 3.0, which will focus on architecture changes, material design and later in 3.1 interactive signage.

Xibo for Windows v2-edge R201

Xibo are pleased to announce Xibo for Windows v2-edge R201. This release works with Xibo CMS version 2 and has legacy mode for version 1.8.

In this release we have swapped from the Windows Forms BrowserControl, which is based on Internet Explorer, and moved to the Microsoft WebView toolkit based on Edge. This will advance the Player's web rendering capabilities and bring it more inline with current standards.

This release is identical to the v2 R201 release from October, except that we:

  • Have swapped to the Edge Browser
  • Require Windows 10
  • Require .NET Framework 4.7.2
  • Added a readme step to the installer which explains what the application does and who it is for

Download Xibo for Windows v2-edge R201.

You can still get a release compatible with Windows 7 and earlier:

Download Xibo for Windows v2 R201.

Instructions for upgrading from an earlier release can be found in the FAQ.

Windows 7

Back in November, we wrote about how the end of support for Windows 7 might effect your Digital Signage.

To help your transition to Windows 10, Xibo will maintain a version 2 of the Player for Windows 7 alongside the newer Windows 10 compatible release. The newer release will have the prefix v2-edge as opposed to v2.

Version 3 of the Player will nolonger support Windows 7 and we do therefore recommend that all users of Xibo for Windows make plans to upgrade their operating system.

Introduction to the Interrupt Layout

Following the release of Xibo for Android v2 R204, Android Players now support the Interrupt Layout functionality available in the v2 CMS!

An Interrupt Layout does exactly as the name implies and will 'interrupt' the usual schedule for a defined Share of Voice percentage...

Introduction to the Interrupt Layout

...from Schedule click on Add Event to open the Schedule Event form.

The new Event Type can be found in the drop down menu...

Introduction to the Interrupt Layout

...complete the form fields as needed and select the Layout you wish to use as the Interrupt.

Define a Share of Voice percentage to tell Xibo how much of the usual schedule should be occupied by the Interrupt Layout.

After each 'interrupt interval', your schedule will then switch back to the pre-interrupt content!

For further information, take a look at the Interrupt Layout manual page.

We are working on bringing this feature to all Players, so watch this space...

Layout Designer

The version 2 Layout Designer that was introduced in 2.0, received mixed reviews from users. Whilst the majority adapted to the changes and were appreciative of the new workflow, we found that some of our users have not been able to upgrade from 1.8 because the new designer did not fit their workflow. We listened to all feedback presented and made small improvements in 2.1 and 2.2 to act as a stop-gap whilst making the larger changes.

Xibo 2.3 represents the larger set of improvements, bringing the designer workflow more inline with 1.8 and addressing concerns raised by some of our users. We hope that 2.3 hits the spot with all of our users!

We have designed a simplified view with 3 elements instead of 4:

Xibo for Windows WPF Player Pre-release

Xibo are pleased to announce a pre-release of Xibo for Windows v2 R252. This release works with Xibo CMS version 2 and has legacy mode for version 1.8. It requires Windows 10.

This Player is a pre-release for testing and should not be used in production environments.

Download Xibo for Windows v2 R252

The Xibo Project's first Player was a Windows Player written in C# and WinForms back in 2004, and although we've added lots of features since then, the underlying technology is the same. This has served us well and provides for a very stable player, but does come with some limitations. There will be some debate as to which limitations are the most important, depending on your use case, but the big 3 are:

  • Internet Explorer 11 for web rendering
  • No transparency or overlapping Regions
  • No transitions

We've been looking for ways to mitigate these issues for years - long term users will recal that 1.8 even came with the option to enable an experimental Chrome web browser! However we've always hit issues with stability or with what is possible in Win Forms.

WPF

WPF stands for windows presentation foundation and is a more graphically orientated framework than Win Forms. WPF is not new and we've tried to move to it in the past, with limited success. However, we think that this time we've done it and that we have a stable and reliable WPF player for our users to try.

In this pre-release we've solved 2 of the 3 main pain points, by including a Chromium web engine and transparency for overlapping Regions. We're also hard at work on adding transitions, which are possible with WPF as our underlying technology.

Download the MSI using the link above and we look forward to getting your feedback on this new addition to the Xibo platform!
