2.2.0-alpha2 Released

We are pleased to announce the release of our second development preview for the 2.2 version of Xibo. The codename for this version is “Olbers”.

13P/Olbers is a periodic comet with an orbital period of 69 years. The comet was discovered on March 6, 1815 and it will next come to perihelion on June 30, 2024.

2.2.0-alpha2 is a development preview only and should not be used in production. You can upgrade to this release from 1.8/2.x series.

Main Focus

The main focus for 2.2 is to improve the scheduling capabilities of Xibo. 2.2.0-alpha2 brings the following new features and improvements:

  • Emailed PDF Scheduled Reports
  • Auto-publish option for Layouts
  • Search the Schedule by Layout
  • Search Layouts by Display/Display Group
  • A new "spacer" Widget to empty a Region for a number of seconds
  • Default Transition to apply to all Widgets
  • "Read Only" view for Published Layouts with access to other areas of the CMS
  • A number of bug fixes from 2.1 and 2.0

We have added the following features to the CMS which will be implemented in each Player in due course:

  • Force HTTPS connection to the CMS
  • Move a Display between CMS instances

Scheduling: Interrupt Layout

Xibo 2.2 will introduce a new concept to its already extensive feature set. This feature, called Interrupt Layouts, will be a new type of event that can be created from the Schedule Calendar.

Interrupt Layouts will have a "share of voice" setting indicting how much in any hour period that Layout should be played. You can only have 1 active at any time.

As the name implies, an Interrupt Layout will interrupt your usual schedule, switch to playing from the Interrupt Layout for a period of time (calculated depending on the share of voice) and then switch back to the pre-interrupt content.

2.2.0-alpha2 includes the CMS side changes for this new feature, Player changes will follow as updated Players are released. This is an exciting new scheduling capability and we're looking forward to having it available on all Players.

Download

We're making this alpha available for people to try using our recommended installation method, Docker. We will be providing release files for the stable 2.2.0 release for those of you running without Docker in due course.

Future development

Our immediate development work will be to prepare a 2.2.0-beta release which will add more polish to all the features we've put in 2.2 so far. We will also be responding to your feedback and any bug reports.

Beyond 2.2 we've begun planning 2.3, which will focus on bringing together all of the feedback we've had in version 2.

Xibo & DSDevices join forces to simplify the buying experience for customers.

We are pleased to announce that Xibo and EV4 Ltd, the creators of DSDevices, have partnered to enable customers to purchase DSDevices exclusively through the Xibo shop.

“DSDevices have been a long-standing recommended hardware option for Xibo, and the two companies have worked in collaboration for a number of years. Enabling customers to purchase DSDevices media players and Xibo software together in one place, is an obvious step for us to simplify and improve the customer experience,” - Chris Hopkins, Director at Xibo.

Initially, only the DSCS9 Android media player will be offered through the Xibo shop, but this is planned to expand in the near future.

“We are proud to be working in partnership with Xibo, and already working closely together to develop a Linux media player, which we hope to release soon,” - Keith Hamilton, Director EV4 Ltd.

The DSCS9 is ready for purchase in the Xibo Shop, offered at $99 USD + VAT, and will be shipped by DHL. This new partnership means that all existing and new customers benefit from a simplified purchasing and in-life support experience through Xibo, while the product continues to be built and developed by the experts at DSDevices.

A recent case study with Xibo customer, VPZ, highlighted the power of combining DSDevices and Xibo across more than 550 displays for a high-quality solution. Download the case study here.

From the 10th of October 2019, all purchases for existing and new customers must be made via Xibo.

We hope all Xibo customers are as happy as we are about this partnership. If you have any queries, please get in touch with the team: sales@xibosignage.com

Please note: If you have previously purchased DSDevices, but do not have a Xibo account, you will need to create an account and request a license pool transfer prior to purchasing further devices. If you have a Xibo account but do not see your licenses previously purchased through DSDevices, then please request a transfer before purchasing further devices.

Elvia PCB Group Improves Internal Communications with Xibo Digital Signage

Elvia PCB Group Improves Internal Communications with Xibo Digital Signage

Elvia PCB group, established in 2003, is the number one French manufacturer of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). The group, whose headquarters are based in Coutances (Normandy, France), has some of the most sophisticated industrial facilities in Europe.

European leader in the fields of Aerospace and Defence, the group is also a major player in several other markets, such as Automotive, Industrial, Medical, Railway and Telecoms. The group has five production facilities, each with a specific area of expertise and market position. It has a turnover of close to 70 million Euros and 570 employees.

THE CHALLENGE

Internal communications across Elvia PCB Group were limited before Xibo was introduced. Not everyone in the production facilities has access to email, meaning that internal company announcements and updates couldn’t be efficiently communicated to the wider audience, limiting employee engagement.

Checking on production progress within specific facilities was also time consuming. Employees would need to manually connect to production systems via a facility workstation to receive updates thus reducing individual productivity time.

Previously there was a system in place for manually checking printed forms when circuit materials arrived onsite. If units were missing or a series of products didn’t arrive, there would be a delay communicating that issue across the facility to all employees, which could again cause production delays.

Elvia PCB Group wanted to find a way to efficiently communicate production updates and information across their facilities. Vincent Boisseau, Network Administrator at Elvia PCB Group and main Administrator for the Xibo solution, explains how the group wanted employees, across teams and locations, to predict next steps in production and plan for any operational issues such as temporary setbacks or interruptions in production.

“Management wanted an easy to use, cost-effective Digital Signage solution, which would enable them to send information simply to a screen on the wall, without other devices or cables to worry about.” ~ Vincent Boisseau

THE SOLUTION

Elvia PCB Group opted for a locally-hosted CMS with the Xibo for webOS Player. This player software is easily installed directly on the display screen, with no added hardware. This provides the group with a cost-effective and easy to roll out solution which is currently implemented across three of their five French facilities.

Elvia PCB Group is rolling out forty-three displays across three of their facilities in France. These displays share vital internal communications and production information.

Vincent explains how this information is displayed on the screens. “Part of the screen is directly connected to our production monitoring system, allowing us to show in real time what we call production orders, starting with the most urgent one. This lets the teams know straight away what's arriving and their next task.”

According to Vincent, another layout region shows dial performance reports with graphics about quality indicators, and the last part enables them to share the company's internal communications per site or for the whole company. This is information such as upcoming client visits, or messages for a specific team or whole facility.

THE BENEFITS

In the short time that Elvia PCB Group has been running their Xibo solution, they have seen increased efficiency in their internal communications which now reach a wider audience. Vincent says, “The person in charge of internal communications prefers Xibo to the communications tool they were using before.”

The Xibo implementation is fairly new and production efficiency data is still being collected, but Vincent is positive about the future outcome. He believes that Xibo will help reduce potential delays in the Elvia PCB Group production lines. This could be done by generating dynamic production updates for all relevant employees.

“Xibo allows us to push vital production updates instantly to employees, instead of them chasing information via outdated technology.” ~ Vincent Boisseau

WHY XIBO?

Elvia PCB Group chose Xibo as their Digital Signage provider for the following reasons.

• Simple Installation
• Cost-effective
• Easy to use
• Versatile

How does Windows 7 End of Support affect your Digital Signage?

How does Windows 7 End of Support affect your Digital Signage?

Windows 7 has been one of the most popular operating systems for 10 years. But all good things must come to an end. On January 14th 2020, Microsoft will discontinue their support of Windows 7. But how does this affect your Xibo Digital Signage solution and what do you need to do ahead of January next year?

What is Windows 7 End of Support?

Microsoft promised to support the Windows 7 operating system for 10 years. That meant providing technical support for its users and software updates for the product. But as they prepare to focus on newer products and services, support for the OS will be coming to an end on January 14th 2020. This means that from that date, if you are still running Windows 7, you will no longer receive technical support or software and security updates from Microsoft for the product.

The main issue with receiving no updates is the impact on security. While your PC will continue to operate, it will be more susceptible to security breaches and viruses, putting your data at risk.

How does this affect your Xibo Digital Signage installation?

Your Xibo for Windows player will continue to work on Windows 7, however after the end of support date, your Digital Signage Display data could be at risk, due to the lack of security updates from Microsoft.

As we develop new, enhanced versions of the Xibo for Windows player, we will be focusing on Windows 10 as a minimum requirement for installation. So in order to benefit from our great, future updates, don’t delay with your Windows migration plans.

What should you do next?

We recommend that you always run Xibo on an operating system that receives updates and security patches. For this reason, we recommend that if you are currently running Xibo on Windows 7, that you begin the migration process to an updated OS such as Windows 10.

If you are going to run Xibo on Windows 10, we recommend that you use the “professional” variant of the operating system. The “home” version no longer has the ability to fully control the schedule of automatic updates which may cause messages to interrupt your signage playback.

If you have any questions about the effect of Windows 7 End of Support on your Xibo for Windows player, contact us.

Fit Solutions Improves Customer Experience with Xibo and DSDevices

Fit Solutions is a Brazilian IT company operating in Japan. The business was founded in 2010 by three brothers who initially owned Nogaih Trading, an import and export business for clothes and shoes in Brazil and Japan. Founder, Fernando Hiagon explains that he had a vision of starting an IT company in Japan and so Fit Solutions was born. Fit Solutions develops websites and web systems for small to medium sized Brazilian and Japanese companies. Most of their clients are Brazilian companies from various sectors including HR, Retail and Hospitality.

Most of the advertisements are job offers for Brazilian workers. Advertisement needs change very fast and using a magazine alone was not meeting their expectations. Fit Solutions needed to find a way of expanding ad visibility and started looking into the option of a Digital Signage solution. When Fit Solutions offered the option of having digital signage above the printed magazine stands, customers became very interested.

THE CHALLENGE

Fit Solutions’ customers wanted more agility in their advertising. “Before we used the Xibo system, whenever a customer wanted to make advertising slides, we had to use a Wordpress site with slide tools to meet their needs.” Fernando explains. “However it requires configuration on the servers to host the sites individually. At first, with 20 customers this was not a problem. Now with over 100 clients across Japan, it is harder to manage all this. With Xibo, this problem has been resolved.”

One of Fit Solutions’ customers is a media company with a magazine focused on the Brazilian market. They have many customers who advertise in their magazines monthly.

“With Xibo, our company has entered a new segment of the market. We are happy to be able to meet the expectations of our customers.”

THE SOLUTION

After researching various Digital Signage offerings online, both paid and free solutions, Fit Solutions opted for Xibo Signage. “Xibo proved to be the most effective of all,” says Fernando. Fit Solutions needed a Digital Signage system that was open source and could be installed on their servers. Xibo makes self hosting super easy with the Docker installation.

Fit Solutions discovered the DSDevices’ DSCS9 for Android after trying various player options across Windows, Ubuntu and Android that simply didn’t meet their requirements. The DSCS9 is a signage player purpose built to run Xibo for Android. It comes complete with Xibo pre-installed, making set up even easier. As DSDevices is fully integrated, out-of-the-box with Xibo and it allows for screen rotation, it was the perfect choice for Fit Solutions.

Fit solutions currently has two Ubuntu19 servers running two Xibo docker instances and the DSCS9 as their main Android player device. They have multiple displays spread in various states of Japan. “We currently have 60 displays in the Brazilian market,” explains Fernando. “Next year we will reach 100.” Fernando has big plans for expansion into the Japanese small business market, focusing on restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops.

THE BENEFITS

“We like everything about Xibo,” says Fernando. Fit Solutions has found Xibo’s simplicity and efficiency impressive and their customers are excited about it too! Fit Solutions feeds customers websites onto display screens. As customers have the ability to edit these websites via wordpress, they can make certain changes to their Digital Signage Display themselves. “Customers can take photos of their promotional products and change advertising copy on their website and immediately the content is updated and shown on the displays. “

Fit Solutions is also seeing the benefit of using the DSCS9 Android Player from DSDevices as their Xibo hardware. “The devices from DSDevices (DSDS9) have become our main hardware solution because of the full out-of-the-box integration with Xibo”.

DSDevices also allow for screen rotation. While most of the Fit Solutions displays are landscape, they do have some portrait ones, so the ability to display both was the perfect solution.

WHY XIBO?

Fit Solutions chose Xibo as their Digital Signage provider for the following reasons.

• Open Source
• Simple to use
• Efficient
• Active community always ready to help
